Understanding the Price and Prize of Teaching: Championing the Stories of Faith, Hope, and Love of Inspiring Teachers
In celebration of the National Teacher’s Month, SEAMEO INNOTECH and NOTED (Network of Outstanding Teachers and Educators), Inc. collaborated once again to organize the forum, “Understanding the Price and Prize of Teaching: Championing the Stories of Faith, Hope, and Love of Inspiring Teachers,” held last 26 September 2016 at SEAMEO INNOTECH. Around 200 teachers, educators, school administrators, and Education students attended the said forum.
The forum was facilitated by Dr. Allan de Guzman, President of NOTED, Inc. and Dean of the College of Education, University of Santo Tomas. The forum has drawn its inspiration from the concept that teacher learning is situated in the safety and authenticity of sharing stories. Guided by the framework developed by Cochrane-Smith and Lytle (1999) called as knowledge for practice, knowledge in practice and knowledge of practice, the learning session went on to discuss interesting narratives and accounts of faith, hope and love of selected panelist as discussants.
The panelists – Mr. Rizal Vidallo, 2012 Metrobank Foundation Outstanding Teacher (Elementary), Prof. Dominique Maquiran, 2013 Metrobank Foundation Outstanding Teacher (Secondary), and Dr. Ramon del Fierro, 2009 Metrobank Foundation Outstanding Teacher (Higher Education) – share about their early years of being a teacher, the struggles they experience, the turning points in their career, their mentors, and memorable students, among others.
The event concluded with video tribute to teachers and prayer for teachers. The song “Aking Guro, Mahal Kong Guro,” winner of the 2015 NOTED Song Writing Contest was also sang at the end of the program.
SEAMEO INNOTECH is a member of the Teachers Month Campaign Steering Committee, and has worked with NOTED, Inc. for the past several years in joint efforts to acknowledge and give emphasis on the crucial role, loyal service and dedicated commitment of teachers in developing globally-minded citizens, nurturing families, strengthening communities and building the nation. This forum was organized in support of the existing Memorandum of Understanding between the two organizations, which includes, among others, the agreement to collaborate on technical cooperation projects and teacher training and faculty development initiatives.
