SEAMEO INNOTECH Highlights Innovations in AI for Education; Final Webinar in the Series Scheduled for August 16

Quezon City, Philippines — SEAMEO INNOTECH continued its knowledge-sharing series, “Fostering the ‘I’ in AI,” with its third webinar, titled Exploring Modern Tools for AI in Education, held on July 19, 2024. The webinar aimed to provide an in-depth look at the latest advancements in artificial intelligence tools and their transformative potential in educational settings. The session sought to highlight how these tools can enhance teaching and learning experiences, promote personalized education, and address critical issues such as data security, ethics, and inclusivity. Featured speakers from Microsoft, Noodle Factory, and Tagpros Education shared their insights and innovative solutions. 

Ms. Kochakorn-Khattapan Acidre, Deputy Centre Director of SEAMEO INNOTECH, opened the webinar with a warm welcome and an overview of the event’s objectives. She emphasized the importance of leveraging AI to drive educational advancements and underlined the significance of collaboration among various stakeholders in shaping the future of education through AI. Her opening remarks set the tone for a day of exploration and discussion on the impact of AI in education. 

Ms. Clarissa Segismundo, Senior Industry Advisor for Education of ASEAN and Microsoft Philippines, provided an engaging showcase of Microsoft’s AI-powered tools. She highlighted how these tools, integrated within the Microsoft 365 ecosystem, offer substantial support to both educators and students. Her presentation included an overview of the Learning Accelerator AI tools, which aim to assist in lesson planning and classroom management, and the innovative Microsoft Copilot, designed to streamline the creation of educational materials and enhance overall productivity. 

Mr. Francis Jim Tuscano, GS EdTech Coordinator at Xavier School and co-founder of Tagpros Education, presented the capabilities of GabAI, an AI-driven platform aimed at reducing administrative burdens for educators. Tuscano demonstrated how GabAI supports various tasks, such as drafting emails, writing memos, and generating classroom research ideas, thereby allowing teachers to concentrate more on their core teaching responsibilities. He also introduced Gabby, a chatbot that assists users in navigating and utilizing the GabAI platform effectively. 

Dr. Jim Wagstaff, Co-Founder of Noodle Factory, shared an in-depth overview of Noodle Factory’s AI solutions. His presentation focused on how the platform personalizes learning experiences through adaptive assessments and self-directed interactions. Dr. Wagstaff also addressed the ethical considerations of AI in education, including the importance of ensuring unbiased recommendations and accurate information. His insights highlighted the role of AI in maintaining a balance between technological innovation and human oversight in educational settings. 

The Q&A session provided a dynamic platform for attendees to engage with the speakers. Key topics included the personalization capabilities of AI tools, measures taken to ensure fairness and accuracy in AI-generated assessments, and the evolving policies surrounding AI use in education. Discussions also touched on the challenges and opportunities presented by AI, including the need for academic integrity and the potential for AI to enhance rather than replace traditional teaching methods. 

In his closing remarks, Dr. Juan Robertino Macalde, Manager of SEAMEO INNOTECH’s Learning Development and Management Office, expressed gratitude to the speakers, participants, and organizing team. He reflected on the transformative potential of AI in education and emphasized the importance of ethical practices in integrating these technologies. Dr. Macalde highlighted the need for ongoing collaboration and innovation to harness AI’s full potential for the betterment of educational practices across Southeast Asia and beyond. 

The webinar was a notable success, garnering over 61,000 views on Facebook and more than 450 views on YouTube, reflecting a strong interest and engagement from the educational community.

Looking ahead, SEAMEO INNOTECH is excited to announce the final webinar in the “Fostering the ‘I’ in AI” series, scheduled for August 16, 2024. Titled AI Governance in Education: Navigating Ethical Implications and Policy Challenges, this session will explore the latest developments in AI in education, address major challenges, and discuss the competencies needed by educators to effectively incorporate AI into their teaching practices. The webinar will also examine the ethical implications and practical concerns associated with AI deployment in educational settings. Featuring discussions on policy frameworks and international collaboration, this session aims to provide valuable insights for the development of a comprehensive AI policies and frameworks for Southeast Asia. The webinar will be broadcast live on Facebook and YouTube and will serve as a prelude to the upcoming SEAMEO INNOTECH 16th International Conference, scheduled for 2025.
