Self-Regulation in Promoting Online Safety
-
Internet technology offers a vast opportunity among its users. However, along with the perks is a threat to our online safety wherein everybody is vulnerable most specially the kids.
The online threats we might meet along the way as we explore the online world could be minimize when we learn how to develop and practice self-regulation. This social emotional skill promotes our ability to control our emotions, thoughts and behaviors.
We may not control the behavior of our learners when they use the internet, however, we are responsible of them and their behavior. Our learners may think that they can independently take charge whatever actions they do online, however, with proper guidance, they can protect themselves online. Taking this into consideration, we must help our learners increase self-regulation by educating them how important to apply reflective and critical thinking when interacting online.
As agents of change, it is important to remember that what we educate our learners must also be seen to us. Just like the saying that has been repeatedly mentioned in the podcast during the interview that “Values are caught rather than taught”. Therefore, to promote self-regulation among our learners we should learn to practice it first.
