Digital Citizenship is indeed not a simple thing. It brings us huge opportunity to connecting in the entire world. As ALS Teacher, I truly have this responsibility to engage learners in understanding the rights and responsibilities of being a digital citizen. It’s not enough that I teach them how to use computer & other electronic gadgets but beyond this is to deeply understand that whatever digital footprints we left online will be other people’s references to define of who we are. Truly, shaping our digital footprints, requires answers to the following questions. What do I look like when I post it? Is this going to be permanent or is there a way for me to delete it? Am I giving away too much about myself? Is it necessary for other people to know this? What I really want other people to know? How will I feel when other people share it without my knowledge? Does it passed the billboard test?

Good digital citizenship engages young students and shows them how to connect with one another, empathize with each other, and create lasting relationships through digital tools.
Bad digital citizenship, on the other hand, entails cyberbullying, irresponsible social media usage, and a general lack of knowledge about how to safely use the Internet.
Fortunately, almost all of the requirements to be a good digital citizen can be taught in the classroom. -

Other source said, it is easy to think of the internet as a separate world and to assume our online identities, actions, and relationships are somehow walled off from our “real world” selves. Easy to think… But the truth is online world is connected to the real world. Using facebook, messenger, twitter, or any other social media accounts that represents or shows actions, activities, data, communications, are proofs that the online world is connected to real world. Despite the distances from each other, there is a communication. Seeing events or particular events around the world. There’s a lot of instances or evidences that online world is connected to real world.

Since we are all digital citizens, we should be more responsible in using the digital media as our platform of communication, resources, and even for fun. Further, our digital world is an extension of our real world where our values, behaviors, and connections are reflections of our real world. We should always consider our digital footprints. Online world is connected to real world. Yes, this is very true since technology is very useful to enhance our lives. The more we rely in the internet, the more if affects our behavior and perspective on how to live it out in our current situation. Whatever we read in the internet, the information we gathered depending on how we digest it can totally change our perspective in the real world. Online world is very useful to us but we must not let ourselves be controlled by this since there’s a big tendency that this might affect the trajectory of our lives. Our behavior in the online world might be different in the real world. People can see us face to face in the real world but not as the same in the outside world. That’s why, it is incumbent for us to be aware and be responsible enough on how to maximize the opportunities and how to minimize the risks by protecting our information and identity and of course by understanding also our rights and responsibility. By knowing all of these, we can assure that the footprints we leave online will be beneficial to everyone.

<span style=”color: #666666; font-family: Lato, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: justify;”>Indeed, as a teacher we need to explore all the avenues we have today, we must maximize everything for us to deliver the best quality of education we could deliver among our clientele. Teachers should not settle for what we have known traditionally. Furthermore, the access of other educational platforms to serve as part of or lessons should otherwise manifest the essence and relevance of our educational goal. Inculcating the valuable aspect of technology as part of our response to a more globalized world. The technology we have today is a wide arena that we need to explore but we should use it in safe, responsible and productive ways. We cannot use it just because we like it, instead we should use it because it has relevance to our lessons and to our everyday life.</span>

We are now in the digital world where in we can have all the access of information. We just have to behave properly while we access the information in the internet. Whatever we do in the digital world can affect us in the real world. Because of this we need to teach our learners on how to be a good digital citizen or how to be a responsible digital citizen.

Online world magnifies and empower our real world. It broadens our perspectives in life. They are connected in such a way that their are things that only online world can do it for us, and there are many things that only real world can offer. They should be connected to make life easier, happier and accessible for all. Online world realizes our imaginations and make our dreams within our reach. Real world offers realistic experiences that made life more meaningful and worthy to treasure.

We are endowed with values and ethics that should be practice in everyday life. I really agree with the podcast’s 1st episode that our values will not be supposed to end on a computer screen but rather to extend beyond to the real world. I have seen and observe a lot of posts on social media that are showing acts like being Godly, kind, environment-friendly, and patriotic and other similar good deeds that attract readers or viewers to follow and comment which are deceiving posts but in reality, it’s the other way around. As an educator, we can connect these values and ethics from the online world to the digital world by leading an example. As the saying goes, “walk by your talk”

Online world can keep us connected to the real world. Whatever we do online, be it positive or negative will reflect to us and we will be held liable for it. Using different online platforms responsibly is a must. Therefore, we should do our best to teach our learners to be sensitive and responsible in accessing the online world.

Digital World or Technology keeps us on the right track in terms of our teaching. It has the ability to enhance the relationship of one another even in a distant. Digital world makes us connected as teachers and learners doing their job in the teaching-learning process. When teachers effectively integrate technology into subject areas, teachers grow into roles of adviser, content expert and coach that will touch the life of the learners. Technology helps make teaching and learning more meaningful and fun. Digital Citizenship should be developed and introduce among learners because they are bombarded with information on a classroom which they must quickly attempt to process and make sense of. It provides learners with access to countless online resources and encouraging them to carry out research that they can used in the real world. Users of internet, on the other hand has a lots of responsibilities to do as they used the digital world, such as respecting others opinion and ideas, following the rules of codes and conduct of different internet site and used appropriate words when interacting with other people in the real world.

Yes, it is! From our speaker, “online world is the extension of the real life”.
The loneliness that they experience from home resorted to being an addict using the internet. They just believed that whatever they couldn’t grab and seek for inside their real world can be instantaneously realized in the online world.
But of course, everything has its limits, therefore, its on us to change learners’ perspective on this. We, as ALS implementers must always remjnd them that not all real can be seen in the online world. And not all that can be seen in the online world are real.

“Bane or Boon?” is the old aged question regarding Technology. With the advent of Internet, everything has become convenient and instantaneous. Sure, one big advantage of the internet is that it globalizes people, by letting them stay connected with each other from different parts of the world in real time. Using emails or social media sites, you can also build and maintain business, promote creativity and create endless opportunities for all. Internet can also be a good medium for you to share your insights, and find like-minded individuals. Education and even the quality of entertainment has grown exponentially with the invention of the net. It seems, at first glance, the pros outweigh the cons. But like any other good thing since chocolate, let’s us take it as double-sided coin. Each benefit comes with a price.
As digital citizens we must remember, think before you post. Once something gets into the internet, it’s always gonna be on there. Information can be leaked and scammed, and in the wrong hands, lead to life ruining scenarios. What we do or say online can leave digital footprints which can be traced back to us, even if we delete the original of, let’s say, an NSFW picture shared in poor taste, or an anti-government rant, or a video skit that bullied differently abled people. Our actions online have their consequences just like real life that can haunt you back sooner or later. Thus, Social and Emotional intelligence as well as critical thinking skills should go hand in hand for us to be able to handle the digital world responsibly. It is essential as well that both parents and teachers should have an agreement on which age appropriate educational materials should be accessible. Children especially under the age of 13 should be constantly monitored and have their internet browsing time regulated.
Although we also must be apprehensive, and even vigilant of other netizens’ faux pas. Don’t be a bully, but don’t be just a bystander that tolerates people trampling on other’s rights either. Passivity is just as bad as complicity, and emotional maturity will let you get a hang on how to navigate though the troll minefield that is the internet. If you’re already entrenched in such drama/trouble online, the best thing you can do is take a step back, and just block everyone else or even make a new account free of toxicity. Go offline for a couple of days.
On other hand, human life is relatively short and wasting time on online distractions, getting in meaningless discussions about things we have no control over, and drifting through our days just scrolling down the screen is like buying an expensive pair of Prada shoes and throwing it into a dumpster fire. You have to be aware of how much time you are spending on social media. Internet can admittedly lead you to amazing domains but it also leads to laziness and procrastination. Maximizing your time each day is all about switching from being a sluggish internet zombie to a proactive beaver, go out and engage in worthwhile activities and other people. Reach out of your digital safe screen. Explore not only the simulated world that gives you new avenues, but also the real life world were possibilities can also become endless.

The online world or digital world is nowadays an inevitable and essential part of real world for both youngsters and oldies; be they are students, parents, stakeholders or educators. During this pandemic crisis, education for both struggling and rich countries are delivered through online classes (as one mode of learning delivery) with the use of internet and applications or softwares like Edmodo, Google Classroom, and Facebook. Everyone, especially the younger people must take precautionary measures and be aware of their rights, responsibilities, behaviors and safety with the guide and help of educators and experts in dealing with the online or digital world connectivities and activities to avoid addiction, health problems, digital footprint risks and hazards, and committing or becoming victim of cyber crimes. The ethics and values molded in the real world must also be applied in the digital world and vis-a-vis with emphasis on wisdom and rationality to keep mental sanity or psychological health. There should be a proper and precise time management for everyone in the use of internet to maximize its productive and healthy usage and minimize its risks. It is not wrong to use mobile phone and gadget as long as the user is of right age to distinguish what is right and wrong, what is good and bad, what is risky and safe, and what is healthy and unhealthy acts; and as long as such mobile device will not control the user. I believe that if people need to drink liquor moderately; they should also treat the same as to internet or mobile device usage. An expert once said and I quote; “Just keep in mind that knowing how to use ICT and the regulations about privacy settings/security settings is only one side of the story. The other side of story which is more important is people’s internal ways of thinking about in controlling and managing their ICT use. So even if they (students) pushed technology aside, just getting students to think critically about how to use the ICT; getting them to be good citizens before they are digital citizens; getting them to be respectful to one another involves offline and online; those are the most important things because regardless of the level of technology they are using, they can carry those attitudes, behaviors and values with them wherever they go and whatever devices they are using.”

Digital citizenship undeniably has a plethora of potential in improving education, with its wealth of knowledge and information accessible with just the tip of our fingers. But remember that unlike education, Digital Citizenship is not a right. It is a privilege that comes with responsibilities to both ourselves and the society. Adapting to the cool gadgets that the 21st century tech has to offer is not necessarily a bad thing, in fact, we should be encouraging everyone to get on with the times and become more tech savvy. Just that, everything you do online will have real life consequences and/or liabilities. It is our duty as teachers to enlighten our learners about the security and safety dangers and not to mention health issues that can bombard you when you plunge headfirst into the virtual deep. One must set limitations and boundaries in order to maintain equilibrium between our online activities and our real lives. Be kind, be nice and stay grounded.</span></p>
