    Opportunities vs. Risks

With the podcast on Digital Citizenship, it explains varieties of its pros and cons. It also presented different real-life situations that each and every Filipino particularly ALS learners encounter on using the internet.

With the unique scenario that we have in ALS, we the implementers should present all these opportunities that the internet could offer to our learners. In like manner, we should also provide them awareness on how to properly and responsibly use it. But we might as well cite the risks that they might encounter as they navigate the internet especially on using social media platforms. It’s good to those first timers, at least, they shall be warned of the prohibited sites or actions whenever they try to start one. But to those who are not, especially the digital natives, some of them might just contemplate on what they know and seems that they are consciously aware of what their actions are prone to. It’s high time to mitigate that perspective. Since, we have the chance to correct them, this must be the proper avenue for us to explain the other sides of it, and exploring the net without risks.

Moreover, just like being shared by the speaker, Firth McEachern, “digital world is the extension of our real life,” then therefore, we must consider all actions over the internet as if it is true to life. We need to be vigilant on what we post, how we post and why we post. These are essential and key concepts that we must teach them.

The bottom line is, these things could neither benefit nor harm us in the future. If we can’t do that now, when? If it’s not us to teach, advocate and correct, then who? And so, we must “maximize the opportunities and minimize risks” in order to be a responsible digital citizen.

Truly, Sir Emil, as teachers we do not only concern ourselves of our digital safety but of our clienteles as well. It is very alarming that different social platforms, that the youth are familiar with, cannot offer safety unless the users discipline themselves and refrain from feeding sensitive information online. It is only by educating them of digital safety and security or digital responsibility which will guide and protect them against unpleasant and dangerous scenarios that digital world may put them into. This concerns not only us teachers, moreso, for parents like me who have teenage children who are in a vulnerable stage. We are lucky indeed to  be part of this training. We learned a lot and may we impart all of our takeaways to our fellow implementers and to the youth/learners.

In a society where technology is rampant teachers play a great role in using this positively. As we can see and observe, younger generations such as our learners are more dependent to technology like internet, cellphones and computers  than us. Teachers should adapt this trend so he can perform his job effectively. Teachers should bear in mind always to teach Digital Citizenship including the use of it in a positive and responsible way.

    ASYNCHRONOUS TASK #2

    Episode 1 Digital Citizenship

    Episode 4 Online Safety

As I listened on the episodes of Right Click Podcast about Digital Citizenship and online safety it makes me think hundred times. In fact, I reviewed and evaluated some of my post  on Facebook. Happy to know that I don’t leave any negative digital footprint on some of my post online. It makes me also realize that posting online should be self-reflecting. Always remember the five (5) questions before posting most especially the last question which is about the “billboard test” that has a great impact in my learnings today.

I am truly blessed and privileged being one of the 1st-hand individuals to study and learn on these excellent learning packets. These will really help me and my learners to walk as one confidently, safely, responsibly and ensure that no one will be put into risk.

Digital education is a must. As teacher, we must be a model to our learners. Appropriate behavior online and offline is very essential because “offline world is an extension of the online world”. Let us protect our reputation, identity and our people to ensure that no negative marks will be left behind.
