Yes, true. In addition, it must always be put in mind our digital footprints. It is important to be very aware of what we are leaving online. Indecent pictures and posts uploaded cannot be easily deleted. Offensive and false information might harm us later. That is why before we post online, we must always consider our digital footprint.

This is the beauty of technology to make our work easier and faster. But we must bear in mind that there are limitations. We should not over-passed this limitations to avoid problems or threats. Thus, before we start, we need to orient ourselves first and to be followed by our learners. We must set as an example or a model to our learners and even to the community.

As digital immigrants, it is very important to be openminded, transform positively and adapt to the current world of digital natives. Being a digital literate is not enough but we must think critically and demonstrate proper use of digital technology, matters most. We must be responsible models and productive and disciplined digital citizens to everyone.

The escalation of modern technology has inevitably changed our course of life. It made things easier for us. Along with the benefits of using modern technology are the potential risks associated with it. Hence, a digitally responsible citizen is not only well-versed in manipulating any gadget and being able to interact online, but how he safely protects himself and others from the threats it may bring. As responsible users, we must maximize the benefits of it in our communication with family and work colleagues, in the teaching-learning process, business transactions, access of information, and other things. However, we must not forget that using digital technology entails great responsibility – we must be aware of whatever we post on social media because it will leave lasting footprints or what we call digital footprints. We must also possess social-emotional intelligence to be more cautious of our words and actions. In the context of ALS, our learners are active users of digital technology, thus it is important that we equip them with relevant life skills, 21st century skills and adequate knowledge on digital technology – competencies which are specifically stipulated in Learning Strand 6. Mastering the learning competencies in LS 6 is a vital part in the holistic development of our learners.

An indelible imprint remains a lifetime for whatever we do and leave behind. Being a digital citizen requires a lot of challenges and responsibilities that no one can perfectly define.
While it is true that we must adopt/adapt to the challenges of Digital Citizenship and the digital world because it is now the language that everyone speaks and the fact that people go online due to unlimited opportunities, we must always remember that life begins at the end of our comfort zone.

In today’s digital world, it’s a whole new reality of learning for students, with so much of their communication and education now happening online. Our responsibility as educators now covers beyond the classroom to a world within keyboards and HTML codes and teaching students to traverse these digital spaces responsibly is the main part of helping them cultivate a healthy relationship with the world around them. Integrating digital citizenship into your classrooms is a vital part of this process.

“The digital world is an extension of our real life”. This podcast episode reminded me as a teacher to model behavior in my social media accounts which learners have access to. I am careful with what I post in my social media accounts. But, I don’t know if there were times that I used social media as a space to overly express myself and might have unconsciously displayed behavior which are little less appropriate. After being reminded of our influence as teachers through this podcast – online and offline, I’d be reviewing more often what I post and share in accounts which viewers include our learners.

The call to teach digital citizenship has been heard by around the world, yet there are a few who question the value, purpose, and position of teaching digital citizenship within the classroom. Many of those questions stem from a lack of understanding around what digital citizenship is, why it is important, and how it should be taught to learners. While learners may know how to operate a technology device, they do not always know how to use it responsibly, nor understand the importance of doing so.

In this new normal, digital world is the extension of our real world where we can outsource different opportunities that makes our life easier but we should always bear in mind the proper way of using it and the corresponding responsibilities every time we use to click. It is advantageous if we use it wisely and promptly but it can harm us if you use it the other way around.

There are many opportunities online. Through the use of internet technology, we can enjoy the many benefits: First, Engagement in other communities; and second, Engagement in communities with interest similar to us, to mention a few.
The podcast anchor and the resource speaker define Digital Citizenship as anyone who used the internet. And based from the definition given, I consider myself as such. I enjoy using some of its elements like the digital education and digital commerce.
Right now, I am enrolled in my post graduate studies. My class is conducted online. I usually refer Google for my reports, problems and research activities. Popular search engines like Google, Yahoo, etc. are my topmost choice as they offer an easy and instant reach to the vast amount of information in just a few seconds. Moreover, there’s no doubt that the ability to sell online has made many businesses viable and profitable. I sell livestock online. Through this facility of the internet technology, I can reach local and international costumers (Filipinos abroad).
As an ALS implementer, while we are yet hindered to meet physically because of the pandemic, we (ALS focal person and ALS teachers) still maintaining a culture of openness. We opted to use video conferencing for majority of our communications.
While we are getting lots from what the internet has to offer, remember, this requires users to be responsible. Being a responsible digital citizen means having the online social skills to take part in online community life in an ethical and respectful way. Manners are important – even in the digital realm. Our top advice? Don’t say anything to anyone online, that you wouldn’t say to them if you met them face to face.
As school leader, I should see to it that students, ALS learners in particular, should practice skills showing proper behavior online. Teachers can initially provide students with a list of approved Web sites to use in class. However, students must be empowered to evaluate sites to make responsible and ethical decisions while surfing the Net. This practice will be helpful when students have to complete research for school or work. Students must be able to recognize if information on a site is valid and credible. Teaching students to critically evaluate Web sites will prepare them for their future education and profession (Pinkham, Wintle, and Silvernail, 2008).

<p class=”MsoNoSpacing” style=”text-indent: .5in;”>As we can observe nowadays, many Filipino people are engaging into digital technology. In the discussion on the episode 1, the Digital Citizenship, it is of great help for us as ALS implementers / educators because we were being refreshed or maybe enlightened about the proper use of this digital technology.</p>
<p class=”MsoNoSpacing” style=”text-indent: .5in;”>I agree with the statement of the speaker that there are many opportunities online like education, commerce, or access with families and friends even you are at a distance. On the other hand, there are also risks especially if we are not aware of the proper etiquette in the online world and that sometimes we can hurt people in posting on the online platforms like Facebook. This is the reason why we as digital citizens should know how to behave in the online world. We have to consider always as digital citizens that everyone in the online world also deserves RESPECT. Whatever will be our digital footprints, it will always reflect our values, attitude and behavior.</p> -

Digital Citizenship is very important to all of us especially that we are starting using digital platforms. This will help us to evolve and to be digital literate and be responsible of what we do in the digital world where it opens opportunities and risk.

My insights about the concept of “Digital Footprint” is that each one of us should learn to protect our own privacy and others’ privacy. I believe that our digital world is permanent, and with each post, each one of us especially our learners are building digital footprint. I realized that it is an essential things for us to self-reflect before we self-reveal. Furthermore, we will always consider how what we share online can impact ourselves and others. Thus, let us help one another to let everyone in our community understand the public and permanent nature of the internet so they can begin to build a positive digital presence.

It brings us huge opportunity to connecting in the entire world. As ALS Teacher, I truly have this responsibility to engage learners in understanding the rights and responsibilities of being a digital citizen. It’s not enough that I teach them how to use computer & other electronic gadgets but beyond this is to deeply understand that whatever digital footprints we left online will be other people’s references to define of who we are. </span>

<p class=”MsoNormal”>A digital citizen is a person using information technology in order to engage in society, politics, and government. As defined by Karen Mossberger, one of the authors of Digital Citizenship: The Internet, Society, and Participation, digital citizens are “those who use the internet regularly and effectively.” according to Wikipedia.</p>
<p class=”MsoNormal”><span style=”mso-spacerun: yes;”> </span>As an ALS Implementer, it was a great help for me. I will give them the best learning materials that suits to their needs, and I t helps a lot to my learners who need to develop their skill in terms of social media or internet accessibility. This is the opportunity to realize and understand their responsibility in using social media , or gadgets, or any platforms that evolve today..</p> -
