Senior Research Specialist Dr. Ethel Agnes Valenzuela and Research Specialist Dr. Sylvette Gunigundo are now officially the country’s SEAMEO focal persons on matters pertaining to multi-lingual education. The two Center specialists went through various capacity-building activities from March to December 2010 to gain the foundation knowledge needed as part of SEAMEO’s MLE core group.

The capacity-building activities were done under the second phase of the SEAMEO-World Bank project on Mother Tongue, dubbed “Enhancing Awareness and Building the Capacity of SEAMEO in Establishing Mother Tongue-Based Multi-lingual Education Programs.”

Along with other MLE Fellows from SEAMEO member countries and sister SEAMEO centers—QITEP and SPAFA, Dr. Valenzuela and Dr. Gunigundo are expected to lead initiatives related to MLE at the national and regional levels.
