INNOTECH launches 50th Anniversary Book and SEA Educational Innovation Awards
On 29 June 2021, SEAMEO INNOTECH conducted an online event to launch its 50th Anniversary Coffee Table Book, “SPECTRUM: Stories of SEAMEO INNOTECH’s 50 Vibrant Years,” and its new program, the Southeast Asian Educational Innovation Awards (SEA EIA). The event was held via Zoom and was broadcasted live on Facebook and YouTube.
The online launch is the Center’s way of celebrating the contributions of INNOTECH stakeholders that made the past 50 years more vibrant and meaningful. Moreover, it also serves as a venue to introduce the Southeast Asian Educational Innovation Awards (SEA EIA). Through the award, the Center hopes to recognize the innovative approaches, strategies, and practices introduced by various education actors to improve teaching, learning, and governance of education in the region.
SEAMEO Secretariat Director, Dr. Ethel Agnes Valenzuela, joined the online launch and delivered a welcome message. She shared a brief history of how the Center was founded and how it stayed true to its mandate for over 50 years. She also shared her excitement for the SEA EIA, which stems from a SEAMEO project in 2016. She highlighted that this is a good way of sharing best practices among teachers and schools in the region, especially now in this challenging times.
The Philippine Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary, Prof. Leonor Magtolis-Briones, also commended the Center’s efforts and initiatives to move the education forward in the Philippines and in the Southeast Asian Region. She thanked INNOTECH for its research projects that helped the Department craft responsive programs, and for its learning programs that continuously improve the capacities of Filipino teachers. She said that the Department will continue to rely on INNOTECH as the country moves towards providing better quality education.
INNOTECH Alumni, Dr. Sadat Minandang, Dr. Manuel Laguerta, Cg. Noorhaizamdin bin Abdullah, along with Flexible Learning Tutor, Dr. Milabel Ho, and Consultant, Dr. Stephen Anzalone, shared their memories of SEAMEO INNOTECH and how the Center has touched their lives.

The second half of the program was dedicated to launch the new program of INNOTECH, the Southeast Asian Educational Innovation Awards (SEA EIA). This was launched through the presentation of INNOTECH Governing Board Member for the Philippines, DepEd Undersecretary, Dr. Jesus L.R. Mateo. He shared a background of the program and provided details on how teachers and school heads can win the award. He encouraged teachers and school heads to send their nominations. The call for nominations was opened after the event and the deadline is set on 31 August 2021.
